The supplementary grant is an addition to the basic grant or interest-bearing loan. The supplementary grant is considered a “performance grant”. This means that if a student does not obtain a degree within ten years, calculated from the first month of student financing, the student is obliged to repay the supplementary grant received. This does not apply to the supplementary grant received during the first five months.
Who is eligible for the supplementary grant?
Whether a student can apply for a supplementary grant depends on the parents’ combined income, the number of children they have who are studying, and a number of other factors. You can calculate whether you are eligible for a supplementary grant on the DUO website.
The old system (you were already studying before 1 September 2015):
The supplementary grant is an addition to the basic grant. The amount of the supplementary grant depends on the amount of the basic grant and the income of the student’s parents.
The new system (you started studying on or after 1 September 2015):
The supplementary grant is an addition to the interest-bearing loan. The amount of the supplementary grant depends on the parents’ income. The maximum supplementary grant is €457.60. If you do not receive a full supplementary grant, you can borrow the missing amount. This means that every student has the same amount of student financing available each month.
