Choosing the right degree is a difficult process for many prospective students. Wrong choices often lead to delays in completing a degree and dropouts. That is why it is very important to be as well prepared and informed as possible when choosing a degree, in order to have an enjoyable time at university. There are thousands of degrees to choose from and just as many information leaflets, websites, open days, etc.
To help you see the forest for the trees, you can start by listing your preferences and interests. A career aptitude test can help with this. This should be part of your career guidance in secondary education. But if you haven’t had this or if you want to take another test, visit your dean or check out www.studiekeuze123.nl. In addition to all kinds of useful tips for choosing a degree, you will also find a complete overview of all degrees offered in the Netherlands. You will find practical information about these programmes and reviews by current students. Once you have a better idea of which programmes and institutions you prefer, request brochures for more information. Visit the programme’s website and attend an open day at the institution.
Tip! To get an even better idea of what a programme entails, you can participate in a shadow day or try out the programme for a day or a week. This will give you a really good idea of what the programme is like.
In addition, almost all colleges and universities include “Studie in Cijfers” (also known as the study guide) in their information material. Studie in Cijfers contains objective and comparable figures on, for example, student satisfaction, labour market prospects and the number of first-year students. This gives you honest information and allows you to compare programmes effectively.
Since 2014, to ensure that you have made the right choice, you are entitled to participate in a study choice activity organised by the programme you have enrolled in. After participating, you will receive study choice advice from the programme (see also Enrolment & matching).
Do not forget to register for the programme of your choice by 1 May at the latest and for selective programmes by 15 January at the latest.
