Tenancy law: how does it work?

Rent allowance, administration costs, subletting… As a student, you often encounter renting and the rights and obligations that come with it for the first time, without receiving any explanation. Reading the law book is not an easy task for most people. That is why the LSVb has developed an understandable guide for students in the field of tenancy law.

The National Student Union receives many questions from students about their rental contracts and the rules for renting a student room. As a tenant of a student room, you are often dependent on your landlord for many things, so it is important to know what you can ask of them and what you are responsible for yourself. For example, do you want to know whether you have to do a repair yourself? Or does the landlord want you to leave the property and do you want to know whether that is possible or not? And are you unsure whether you are actually a main tenant or a co-tenant and what this means for your rental situation? The answers to these questions can all be found in the tenancy law book, which is based on the law. It is important not only for you, but also for the landlord, that tenants know exactly what is and is not allowed. As a tenant, you are often in a stronger position than you think, but that doesn’t help if you are not aware of it. So don’t be discouraged by difficult legal texts, pick up the tenancy law book and say goodbye to uncertainty!
